Three Young Drivers Looking to Drive to the Xfinity Series Title

Brandon Jones is having a career season. At 23 years old, he is the veteran of the Joe Gibbs Racing Xfinity Series program and has shown it this season with poise as he has driven to victory lane three times, including scoring Toyota’s 500th NASCAR victory at Phoenix Raceway earlier this season. Jones added additional victories at Kansas Speedway and Darlington Raceway with incredible late race passes. He is the fifth seed heading into the first round of the Playoffs.
Harrison Burton with his first Xfinity Series trophy for winning at Auto Club.
Harrison Burton has had an outstanding rookie campaign in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The youngest Playoff competitor at just 19 years old, Burton earned his first career victory in just his 12th career NXS start at Auto Club Speedway in February. That was part of a NASCAR record 10 consecutive top-10 finishes to begin his rookie season. Burton added another win at Homestead-Miami Speedway in June and heads into his first ever Playoffs as the seventh seed.
Riley Herbst prepares to board his Supra.

His competition for the Rookie of the Year comes from in-house at Joe Gibbs Racing as Riley Herbst is also a Playoff contender in his debut season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Riley enters the Playoffs as the 11th seed. He drove to two runner-up finishes, including finishing second to Burton in his first win at Auto Club Speedway and has earned seven top-10 finishes in the last eight events coming into the Playoffs, which kicks off at his home track this weekend.

The seven-race Playoff run starts at Las Vegas and takes us through to November as one driver will lift the trophy as Xfinity Series champion at Phoenix Raceway.

Toyota Drivers Tally Top-Five Finishes at the Bristol Bullring

“We had a really good Skittles Camry; it was fast and the team gave me a piece to contend with at least,” said Busch. “We definitely weren’t the fastest car. The 4 (Kevin Harvick) was definitely the fastest car. We made some adjustments there the last run and got closer and better. Just lapped traffic. Gotta go where they ain’t and man, where they are, you want to be.” In Friday night’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race, Harrison Burton (fourth) earned a top-five finish to lead Toyota in the Food City 300 at Bristol Motor Speedway behind race-winner Chase Briscoe. “I’m frustrated because I feel like we’re not running up to our potential as far as lap time,” said Burton. “It was a track position battle big time. It’s hard to pass here. You about have to wreck the guy in front of you to pass. It was a challenge to try to get that track position once you lost it. We did a good job I think all night of kind of getting ready and trying to survive until the end and then it just didn’t work out at the end. I’m excited. I think we’re going to have a really good Toyota Supra in the Playoffs. I know my guys are putting in extra hours and I’m putting in extra hours and I’m just so excited to go to work and have a chance to run for a championship. It’s really going to be fun and I’m excited.”

Kyle Busch
Burton was joined in the top-10 by his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Brandon Jones (eighth) and Riley Herbst (10th). All three drivers have secured Playoff spots and will begin their Playoff journey this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
In Thursday night’s NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series race, Chandler Smith (fifth) led Toyota at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Toyota Playoff drivers Christian Eckes and Austin Hill battled adversity all night. Eckes earned stage points in both stages and finished the race in 12th, while Hill made contact with the wall on lap two and battled damage all night. The Truck Series regular season champion drove to a 25th-place finish behind race-winner Sam Mayer.
Chandler Smith scored a top-five finish in Thursday night’s NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

“We tried hard,” said Eckes. “We just didn’t make it happen I guess. Had an okay Safelite Tundra at times, just fought track position all night and really wasn’t good enough to pass. I’m ready for Vegas. Thankfully, we don’t have to come to Bristol next week.”

Christian Eckes
The ARCA Menards Series ran two races this weekend. Ty Gibbs finished second to Sam Mayer on Thursday evening at Bristol Motor Speedway with Max McLaughlin (third), Mason Diaz (fourth) and series points leader Michael Self (fifth) joining him inside the top-five. On Saturday, the series ran at Winchester Speedway and Gibbs earned his fifth win of the season. Self (second) and 15-year-old Jesse Love (fourth) also drove to top-five finishes.

All Three Team Toyota Drivers Advance in the NASCAR Cup Playoffs

“The guys did a great job and gave me a really great piece tonight to contend and at least be up there and be close,” said Busch. ”Unfortunately, just didn’t have enough. Lapped cars were definitely a problem. It’s part of racing. You have to try to get around them where you can and there was just no room for me to do what I needed to do with a couple of those opportunities to get past them.”

Saturday, September 19, 2020, Erik Jones finishes third at Bristol Motor Speedway

“The Auto Owners Camry got better all night, and honestly, the last run of the race was our best,” said Jones. “We got up there into third and I kind of knew I couldn’t beat those guys straight up. So, I tried to say a little bit on the front half of the run and run at the end hard and just kind of ran out of time. I had just got to those guys when I took the checkered, so a good day. It was nice to be up there in contention at the end, but close again at Bristol. Especially in this race. We’ve been close a few times, just want to close one out here soon.”

Brandon Jones
The NASCAR Playoffs continue when the Round of 12 kicks off at Las Vegas Motor Speedway next Sunday afternoon. Coverage begins at 7:00 p.m. ET on NBCSN and can be heard on PRN Radio as well as Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.

Team Toyota Drivers Finish Inside the Top-10 at Bristol

Jones comes into The Playoffs on the heels of three wins in the regular season and fifth in the standings. “I think Vegas is the one we need to go out and just wear them out. That could be the one you just go and win and if we do that and lock ourselves into the next one then Talladega and the ROVAL, those two, you go out and be aggressive and try to get as much as you can. If it doesn’t work out, you don’t have to worry about it too much. That we will our plan going into Vegas, but not putting ourselves in position either to where it’s going to mess us up at the end of the day and make to where we have to be good at those other two tracks.”

Herbst rolls into the Xfinity postseason as the 11th seed.  “(We) Just couldn’t get the handle on our Monster Energy Supra tonight. I need to be better. We need to be better on pit road and me behind the wheel. It was a good wake-up call as we head to the Playoffs here. Going home so maybe we can get some home luck next week and cash in, get a win and advance and spoil some people’s Playoff bubbles.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs kick off next Saturday evening at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN and can be heard on PRN Radio as well as Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.
